France’s TotalEnergies has started drilling wells as part of the Tilenga oil field development project in western Uganda.

Drilling of wells at Tilenga fields began in July 2023, and production is scheduled to begin in 2025. In total, 420 wells will be drilled within the Tilenga project, including 200 water injection wells, 196 production wells, and 28 reference wells.

TotalEnergies (62% participation) and its partner, China CNOOC (8% participation), expect that the volume of production will be 190 thousand barrels/day of oil. The remaining 30% stake in the project belongs to the state-owned UNOC and Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (15% each).
