China drilled record depth geothermal well

09 April 2024

Sinopec has completed drilling the deepest geothermal well in China. The Fushenre-1 well in Hainan Province has reached a record depth of 5.2 km, drilling 250 million years old granite.
Drilling began in August 2023. The new well will significantly increase geothermal development, which is important to reduce hydrocarbon consumption. Geothermal reserves at depths of 3 to 10 kilometers are equivalent to 856 trillion tons of coal. Using even 2% of these resources will provide energy 2.99 thousand times that of China in 2023.
Geothermal energy is seen as a promising alternative to fossil fuels, despite the significant financial cost of its development.
