Azerbaijan oil is shipped to China via the Northern Sea Route for the first time
27 August 2024
For the first time, an Azerbaijani tanker headed to China via the Northern Sea Route, according to LSEG data.
The tanker Prisma, registered under the flag of the Cook Islands and owned by Evergreen Embrace, transports oil from Primorsk and is currently in the Kara Sea.
The ICE 1C class tanker, specially equipped for navigation in ice conditions, overcomes a route that is increasingly used for cargo transportation, competing with the Suez Canal. In the current navigation season, six Russian vessels have already transported about 600 thousand tons of oil to China. However, due to the higher cost of carrying ships along this route, China remains the main economically profitable destination.
