The country’s oil reserves are estimated at 6.5 billion barrels, of which 1.4 billion barrels are recoverable.

On Tuesday, Uganda launched the first oil drilling rig in the country’s history. According to the local newspaper Daily Monitor, the process of oil production began at the Kingfisher oil field in the Western region of the country.

According to the publication, the development of reserves of this field, which is controlled by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), will be an important stage in the development of the Ugandan economy. So far, the country’s leadership has imported all the oil consumed.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Uganda, in addition to the Kingfisher field, located south of Lake Albert, it is planned to produce oil in the Tilenga area to the north of the lake. This can be done by the French oil and gas group TotalEnergies.

In the future, Uganda intends to produce about 230 thousand bpd.
