Saudi Aramco found new gas in the desert

30 November 2023

The National Oil Company of Saudi Arabia announced the discovery of two natural gas fields Al-Hiran and Al-Mahakik in the southern part of the country.

Drilling two exploration wells in the desert brought the company a commercial influx of gas and gas condensate.

In addition, natural gas was found in five reservoirs at the previously discovered fields of Usaikerak, Shadoun, Mazalij, Al-Wadhihi, Awtad.

Saudi Aramco plans to double its gas production by 2030 compared to the level reached in 2021 of 120 billion cubic m per year. The country is already one of the ten largest gas producers. In early November, Saudi Aramco launched production of hard-to-recover gas at the South Ghawar field.

By 2030, Saudi Arabia plans to produce 50% of the country’s electricity based on natural gas.

The country produces more than 117 billion cubic meters of gas. Almost all of it is consumed on the territory of the Kingdom.
