The world’s largest solar power plant has been launched in China
A 5 GW solar farm is connected to the grid to provide electricity.
State-owned Power China has connected the largest solar power plant in the world in the Xinjiang region to the power grid. Its capacity is 5 GW, with an area of 200 thousand acres.
The solar installation is located in a desert area near Urumqi, it will generate about 6.09 billion kWh of electricity per year. This volume would be enough to provide energy to Papua New Guinea for a year.
Sparsely populated Xinjiang, rich in solar and wind resources, has become a hub for large renewable energy bases that send most of their energy to China’s densely populated east coast. Two other major operating solar projects are also located in western China — the Longyuan Power Group project and the Golmud Wutumeiren solar complex of the Chinese company Lüfa Qinghai New Energy, both with a capacity of 3 GW.
